[Video Games] The reboot that got rebooted: The rise and fall of DmC: Devil May Cry

Let's cut through the pre-amble:
What is Devil May Cry?
Devil May Cry is an action series developed and published by Japanese company Capcom, beginning with Devil May Cry 1 in 2001 for the Playstation 2 (Here's an advert showing it as part of Sony's holiday lineup that included landmark gaming titles such as Final Fantasy X, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and... Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance). The game series began as a prototype build for Resident Evil 4 that had more of an overt action focus than the acclaimed horror franchise was known for. Rather than scrap the build, Capcom saw potential in the idea of a stylish action game, and gave director Hideki Kamiya permission to make it a full title.
Kamiya would involuntarily leave the series after DMC 1 as Capcom didn't ask him to work on DMC 2. Instead, a still-to-this-day unknown phantom director was put in charge of the game and he ran it into the ground. With less than half a year before DMC 2's 2003 release, Capcom brought in a new director to course-correct and get the game out for release: Hideaki Itsuno. In less than six months, Itsuno would rally the team, basically make the entire game, and create several features that would go on to become series staples, and while DMC 2 sold well, it was critically panned for being a very boring game. Itsuno, not wanting his reputation to be sullied, came back in 2005 with Devil May Cry 3, generally considered one of the greatest action games of all time. From here several core traits are instilled: chief among which being style meters that track the player's skill with combos and Dante having a style system that lets him use different movesets.
And it's in 2008 with the release of Devil May Cry 4, marking the series going multiplatform for the first time as it came out on the PS3 and Xbox 360, that this story really begins:
The build up to 2010
With DMC 4's release in 2008, Capcom set the sales expectation that the game would sell 1.8 million units by the end of the fiscal year. DMC 4 would sell two million units in under a month, but Capcom were a bit unimpressed. They were hoping that now that DMC was on a wider range of platforms that the sales would correspondingly go up, but instead the game just saw a modest increase over DMC 3. The cost of game development had also shot up in the new console generation, making Capcom more concerned about DMC4's sales just being fine, especially coming off of huge sales juggarnauts from 2007 such as Halo 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Bioshock. (It doesn't help that DMC 4 had a very rushed development leading to the now infamous case of Dante's playable chapters just being Nero's but backwards)
Japan at the time was also in a weird place when it came to gaming. The mobile phone gaming market was about to take off, and the playerbase in Japan was already smaller than the worldwide market for obvious reasons. In the home regions, it was safer to look into handheld gaming, and while Capcom had dallied with the idea of a DMC game on the Playstation Portable (at one point considering a remake of the first game that reached in-game screenshots and box art that was quietly shelved for unknown reasons, alongside a prequel focusing on Dante's father Sparda), these ideas never left the ground. Seeing how Western markets were more traditionally concerned with console gaming at this time (and the success of the God of War franchise proved Action was a genre people wanted), Capcom's idea was simple:
Give their IPs to Western studios and let them take a crack at it, with the idea being their knowledge of what the West wants would let the games sell better. The results were mixed. The Bionic Commando reboot is nowadays more known for the twist of YOUR WIFE IS THE ROBOT ARM and only sold 27,000 units in a month, but Dead Rising did fairly well under a Capcom Vancouver branch until Dead Rising 4 happened and uh... kinda killed the series because it was awful.
Capcom eventually set their sights on giving the West a crack at DMC, leading to them eyeballing several studios. This worked out well for them in that Itsuno was also burnt out. After having spent five straight years on DMC and having redeemed its image after DMC 2, Itsuno was ready to take a break and make his dream game: Dragon's Dogma, a dark fantasy game that is very fun. It got a Netflix anime adaptation recently that is... not as fun. But while Itsuno was making Dragon's Dogma, Capcom had some time to spitball handing the series off. They eventually settled on Ninja Theory, an up and coming British team best known for Heavenly Sword (a very pretty game with mediocre action combat and a priority on storytelling), and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (a modernisation of Journey to the West that was very pretty but priotizied story over gameplay). Rumors began to circulate in early 2010 that Ninja Theory had acquired the license and would be making a prequel focusing on Dante's early days, but it would only become clear at Tokyo Games Show that year when DmC: Devil May Cry* was formally announced.
And the fanbase collectively hated it.
(* Yes that does technically mean this reboot's name is Devil may Cry: Devil May Cry. I'm going to call it DmC from here to differentiate it from the core series)
The TGS Trailer
For those unaware of DMC, I should stress that by 2010, it had a reputation for a certain flair and theatics. Dante was known to be a goofball in cutscenes, taunting enemy demons and making a mockery of them. He has an entire cutscene in DMC 4 where he acts like he's on the stage of a theatre with how grandious he is. People liked Dante for this reason, he was a breath of fresh air in a time when most protagonists were stotic, gritty jerks who only talked in curse words and gravelly shouts. And his flowing white hair was also certainly iconic.
So here comes the new take on Dante, the West giving him a go and oh... hoo boy. There's no charisma, there's no panache. The trailer has no gameplay. Dante doesn't look like a trash talker, he looks like a meth addict. He's smoking, something the DMC 1 design documents said Dante would never do as (per Kamiya) smoking is uncool. His hair isn't even white!
Now let me be clear: I am not opposed to a new take on Dante. Certainly, the idea presented in the reveal trailer that Dante is imaging the demons he fights as an acute case of psychosis is an interesting idea, as it raises the question of whether or not the demons are real or if he's senselessly killing random people. But the execution would have had to be perfect, and opening with just a fancy trailer that had no signs of gameplay for an action franchise was not the right foot to start on.
What doesn't help was that the entire Western Capcom initiative was one pushed by a very controversial figure in gaming called Keiji Inafune, who would leave Capcom right after DmC's announcement in 2010. Inafune was the one most strongly advocating for the western development approach (Something Capcom were quick to stress in 2010 after his departure), but with his departure the movement had less steam. Inafune would go on to make Mighty Number 9, a Kickstarter that went miserably wrong on every turn and is usually seen as one of the most disappointing games of the 2010s.
I should also point out here: Dante's radically different design from the norm of the series was a mandate imposed by Capcom. Ninja Theory's original concept art for Dante was much more closer to his traditional design- white hair, red coat and all. But Capcom, and Itsuno especially, were adament that if Ninja Theory were going to be doing something new with the franchise, that they needed to go off the cuff- in Capcom's own words, "Go crazy."
The development
So Dante got a new color palette, a darker jacket and black hair. But at the time (this news only came out two years after the redesign was revealed), people didn't know about Capcom explicitly telling NT to go off the rails, and what they saw... was Ninja Theory going off the rails in the wrong way.
So from the word go, fans aren't happy. Fans are usually never happy but I mean they were unhappy. Chief Creative director for Ninja Theory Tameen Antionades said after the reveal: “The vitriol was immediate, aggressive and relentless for the next two years. Without a second of gameplay being shown, it had been written off as a disaster in the making.” Tameen would become the ball and chain around DmC's marketing, which is quite apparent in how Ninja Theory would dial back on his appearances as we get closer to the game's release. The backlash to the launch clearly surprised Ninja Theory and caught them off guard, with Tameen publically lashing out at the original fanbase for writing the game off or being unhappy at Dante's visual redesign. This would go on to dominiate the discussions about DmC for its pre-release cycle, as it became less about the game and more about the community and whether or not the response was justified (alongside in typical internet fashion, a few death threats being tossed around which apparently included a full metal song). No matter which side of it you lean on though, Tameen had habit of putting his foot in his mouth in regards to PR:
Capcom likely stepped in behind the scenes and encourged a few changes. Notably, Dante's design underwent a few shifts, including making him more muscular and rewriting portions of the game to give him a few more of Old!Dante's trademark quips. A few voice actor was also cast, named Tim Phillips... though NT wouldn't budge on the haircut as it was part of the story. The Dante psychosis/prisoner angle from the TGS trailer was also completely scrapped from the final product, having Dante instead be confirmed to be sane and fighting demons, not people. Even though Capcom had encouraged NT to go off the rails... money still reigns supreme and Capcom wanted to turn a profit. So closer to release, Capcom made a point of stressing that Itsuno and several other DMC veteran staff were supervising the combat system and offering guidance. Combat designer Rahni Tucker spoke positively of the exchanges she had with Itsuno:
While Capcom Japan kept a close eye on Ninja Theory’s work on DmC’s characters, story and world, its greatest focus was, naturally, on the game’s combat. Itsuno and other key personnel would visit the studio in Cambridge every few months to check in on its progress, Ninja Theory staff would often make the trip out to Japan, and in between those times there would be regular video conferences and daily email updates. All that communication helped to unify the two companies, despite a fundamental split between their approaches to game development: Ninja Theory liked to start with the visual design, and Capcom with the mechanics. Modestly, Itsuno admits he learned a lot from the collaboration; Tucker believes she picked up an awful lot more. “I learnt so much,” she says. “Itsuno would speak philosophically about how he approaches combat and enemy design. They build most of the player’s set of actions first, and then think about the things they can build to allow players to exploit particular elements of the system they’ve designed. They really put the emphasis of the baddie design back onto the player’s actions. It’s kind of obvious, but just the way that he spoke about it was inspiring, and it made a lot of sense to me.”
The damage however, was long done. Even with the post-TGS revisions, DmC was facing an uphill battle from the community, with a minority waiting to give it a try themselves before casting judgement, but the majority either being apathetic or downright hostile to the game, not helped by Tameen's attitude creating the idea that Ninja Theory inherently hated what made Devil May Cry good (again, keep in mind most players wouldn't learn that Capcom were pushing for the radical Dante changes until years post-release). Ultimately though, Capcom themselves are to blame for the choices that impacted DmC: Ninja Theory were only doing their jobs to the best of their abilities and for the most part many of the staff clearly loved getting to work on such a popular franchise and boosting their studio's name. It came down an unfortunate blend of Capcom misreading what people wanted from future projects, an attempt to appeal to a Western market that fell on its face, and a director unprepared for the mass backlash his product got.
Either way, the game finally came out in early 2013.
The game itself
Eh, it was OK.
DmC launched in March 2013 and got decent reviews on all platforms, getting a consistent 8/10 on all platforms on Metacritic. The PC port was especially praised for its sheer variety of features including an uncapped framerate. Critics quite liked it, praising the story and art direction, feeling it was a necessary step for the series to make the games somewhat easier to let newcomers in without facing as daunting a challenge as the games could be (I'm pretty sure learning how to fly a plane is easier than mastering Dante in Devil May Cry 4). Old Dante's most famous voice actor, Reuben Langdon, spoke on a podcast about the game and admitted that while he wasn't fond of the new Dante's characterisation, he applauded Ninja Theory's craftsmenship.
The fanbase were colder, even with the pre-release biases set aside (this wasn't helped by Platinum, helmed by several ex-DMC 1 developers including Kamiya, releasing Metal Gear Rising Revengeance also in 2013. Metal Gear Rising is a very good game that involves flipping giant robots and fighting a very actractive Brazillian man with a gun-sheath sword). The game's framerate on consoles was capped at 30FPS for technical reasons when all prior games ran at 60FPS. Dante had lost a lot of his mechanical complexity (including DMC 3 and 4's style system which offered Dante special abilities he could switch between such as more sword and gun combos, blocking and dodging) in favour of a more universal moveset. The Devil Trigger super mode was pretty lame and automatically knocked all enemies into the air, which people didn't like as it made most encounters too easy. Building up style was too easy and the game had no systems to stop you spamming the same combos over and over. The game's weapon system of angel/demon themed weapons included color-coded enemies that forced you to use the right gear or you'd be punished. There was no Turbo Mode, a feature in most games that automatically boosted the game's speed by 20% on average.
Ninja Theory still made a good action game, albeit one that needed a bit more refinement to reach its true potential. But the lack of several core features (or worse, poorly implemented iterations of said features) led to the fanbase adopting a term:
"It's a good game, but it's not a good Devil May Cry."
The fanbase were willing to concede to the good aspects of the game- especially in audiovisual aspects. Enemies now got a subtitle during their first appearance, weapons getting a slight glint when the player pauses to let them know they can launch a pause combo attack, the soundtrack was now dynamic and evolved up the higher your style rank got, alongside the killing blow at the end of a fight getting a cinematic camera angle. Ninja Theory's sense of style itself was something that impressed the Capcom team, as all of these aspects were modified and adopted into the mainline games come 2019. The game was also very beautiful in places, leaving the Gothic archetecture of the main games for a more European feel in Limbo City. Madrid in Spain and Genoa in Italy are clear influences on the archetecture, and the design team adapt them well in making Limbo a city that is itself a weapon trying to kill Dante through compressing alleyways, closing off paths or mocking him through writing on the walls, Splinter Cell Conviction style. Combichrist and Noisia's collaberations for the soundtrack were also praised between their licensed work and new music composed just for the game, especially the songs Never Surrender and Throat Full of Glass.
But for all the praise, reluctant or otherwise, that game got mechanically, the story that the critics had acclaimed as mature and a right step forward had few supporters among the playerbase. There's been a lot written and said about DmC's story so I'll cap off the highlights here:
The end was an OK game let down by a bad story. The tale of many a game. And unfortunately, partly thanks to the game just not being good enough for the DMC pedigree, DmC underperformed. Capcom initally hoped for 2 million units to be sold like DMC 4, but later quietly lowered their projections down to 1.2 million. Some rumors speculate that Capcom had to artifically boost the game's sale numbers by counting anyone who downloaded the game when it was for free as part of Playstation Plus in January 2014 (games that go on PS+ or Microsofft's Xbox Live Games with Gold service are usually games that are either selling so well they can take the hit, are past their lifespan and looking to reignite the playerbase, or did very badly and this is a last ditch effort to get interest into the game). While not speaking directly about DmC, Capcom spoke frankly in a financial report regarding their Western outsourcing, attributing the lack of success to a "delayed response to the expanding digital contents market," "insufficient coordination between the marketing and the game development divisions in overseas markets," and a "decline in quality due to excessive outsourcing". The long and the short of it was: DmC flopped commerically, failing to meet the sales of DMC 4 in the West (which remember was Capcom's entire reason for the reboot) when it was released on the exact same platforms, and the consoles had a larger install base due to five years having passed. For what it's worth, Itsuno himself support the game and approved of Ninja Theory's efforts, even saying he'd have been honored to work on a DmC Devil May Cry 2 had Capcom gone with that project.
Some post-launch support would follow, including DLC costumes based on concept art for Dante and several alt skins based on his DMC 1 and 3 appearances, Bloody Palace (basically a time trial gauntlet run) and a campaign focusing on Vergil that sets up a sequel hook which never gets followed up on.
Some Ninja Theory staffers didn't take the news well, especially as they knew that their reputation was going to take a large hit after DmC. Art director Alessandro Taini gave a GDC talk where he went on a weird rant involving editing DMC 4 Dante into stills from... Brokeback Mountain and Batman and Robin, while also saying reboot Dante was based on... Tyler Durden from Fight Club (for those who don't know Fight Club, you're not meant to agree with Tyler or find him a role model). Keep in mind that this is Taini basically shit-talking character designs he had no hand in making. In a hilaripus twist of irony, Dante would later in the series get a cowboy hat as a weapon. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Capcom up to this point had been going back and forth on what DmC even was- was it a prequel, a reboot, an alternate universe? They seemed to change the answer every month. But after the game's failure to meet expectations commercially, they quietly settled on it being based on an alternate universe, as was confirmed in of all things, Donte appearing as a DLC alt skin for Dante in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.
(While I'm on the topic of weird fighting game trivia, Donte actually also got a full fighting game appearance in the "classic," Playstation All Stars Battle Royale as an attempt to market DmC ahead of its release. Yes, Donte technically didn't even debut in his own game. This story is so weird to me! In the trailer he even fights the protagonist of previous Ninja Theory game Heavenly Sword)
In 2015, Capcom re-released the game for the new consoles as DmC: Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition. This was largely helmed by the Capcom team in Japan who modified the game to make it more in line with DMC's series standards of gameplay. And you know what? It's really good! Genuinely, it actually makes the game and takes it from "A good attempt" to "one of the best Western attempts at action games period." 60FPS on consoles, all DLC included, Turbo Mode was back, a new mode called Must Style where you have to get an S Rank in combos before your attacks do damage, all alongside an insanely detailed changelog penned by Rahni Tucker. The one downside? It never got released on PC for unsaid reasons, presumably that most of the new gameplay additions... were based on mods made by the PC fanbase. Mods you can no longer find as the site storing them has gone down.
However even with this, DmC would get sand in its eye one more time. In the same year, Capcom released a similar re-release of DMC 4 called Special Edition. It was far more bare bones than DmC: DE, only adding three new playable characters in Lady, Trish and MOTIVATION Man himself, Vergil. Despite the game only getting a physical release in Japan and being digital only here in the West (whereas DmC: DE got a full release), Capcom eventually said that DMC 4 SE obliterated the DE in sales, with Capcom specifically saying that 4SE's digital sales led to a better quarter in 2015 than they were anticipating. As of 2020 (due to Capcom counting their re-releases of games separately than the original release when it comes to sales), we know that DMC4SE has sold 1.5 million units, while DmC: DE sold 1.1 million.
However, ultimately, I'm very joyful to admit that everyone got a happy ending! No, literally, everyone came out of this for the better. Ninja Theory in 2017 would release Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, a critical and commerical darling made on a self-styled "AA" budget that was praised for its handling of mental health through the lens of its MC Senua. It made its budget back easily, they're now owned by Microsoft and they're currently working on a sequel called Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2. Capcom would bounce back from their slump in the Early 2010s, beginning in 2017 with the releases of Resident Evil 7, Monster Hunter World and a certain title I'll mention in a minute. They've been releasing hit after hit for the last four years and they have more on the horizon. And Itsuno, now having made Dragon's Dogma, came back raring to go with more Devil May Cry. Though there are some rumors by Dante's voice actor that he had to threaten to leave Capcom to get it, at E3 2018 as part of the Microsoft panel, Itsuno took to the stage and announced:
"DMC IS BACK!!!"

Elephants on the Field: Week 2

Elephants

Winning at fantasy means making predictions and acting on them prior to other players. To do that, you don't always have the privileges of hindsight and deduction. You will need foresight and inference. I hope to offer a some good if not somewhat inferential arguments for why some early moves on this weekly (if I have time) post.
Fantasy thinking is often over-obsessed with statistical correlations at the expense of firm causal understanding of what is happening on the field. The forest is often lost for the trees. A combination of understanding the game of football, recognizing interconnected changes that will influence teams, and eye testing the games themselves is the best antidote to the groupthink, herd-mentality of fantasy football expertism which, time and again, proves spotty at best in anticipating changes.
Last week I posted this as "Eye-tested Takes" but I realized that's not what I was aiming for. A variety of posters and services watch the whole game and give you maximally thorough takes on every snap. I won't offer much of an opinion on players/teams I don't watch. I'll always watch enough. However, a lot of what I'll make as the case for picking up (or dropping) a player will be based on obvious things that are happening that rankings-myosis may miss.
There's always an elephant in the room that no one want's to acknowledge. This post gives fantasy advice that accounts for the elephants on the field.

Things I'm right about (so far):

1. Rivers Noodle Arm = Colts Lean into Jonathon Taylor:
With the quality of that offensive line, Mack going down, and Rivers looking like shit, Jonathon Taylor may end-up being a top-5 back this year. TY Hilton and Parris Campbell are going to disappoint you.
A bunch of commenters disagreed, insisting Hines was the guy to get and Taylor as a top-5 was nuts. This is an instance of the eye-test making people too smart. Yes, Taylor netted 22 yards on 9 carries week 1. Who cares, he was great in college (larger sample size) and more importantly, Rivers looks SOOO spent that Taylor is the only obvious bell-cow RB for what is probably the best O-line in the league. You want that. Rivers threw it 25 times in week two (down from 44). Taylor had 26 carries, 2 receptions, 110 yards, and 1 touchdown. It was obvious what had to happen in Indy but fantasy groupthink herded everyone toward Hines.
If you had the audacity to ignore me on this (/s), the good news is there's still time. His trade value has skyrocketed on most charts but he's not quite valued as a top back yet. If you get the feel someone is under-valuing him, don't wait longer because his first 2 TD game is going to make him inaccessible in a trade. The Colts defense is also looking good enough to maintain a lead throughout a game, opening-up more run play calls. (Rivers sucking is going to do that all the time anyway).
And if you still don't believe me, watch his highlights from this week and you'll see why he could be such a focal point. He does a lot of things that coaches like to lean-into: great ball security, adds 2-3 yards to the end of runs, explosive speed when he has big holes.
2.Browns Offense is fine:
Don't panic about the Browns offense. Baker Mayfield looked like trash but the running offense actually looked pretty good at times...Stefanski is the guy you need to believe in... The biggest takeway from the game isn't the Browns offense is bad, its that the Ravens defense is great.
Both Browns running back scored multiple TD's and registered more than 150 yards each week 2. Baker continued to suck and it didn't matter. Stefanski's offense is good and his coaching career is a testament to his talent. All-Ivy-League Football Player. First coaching job was in the NFL. They wouldn't let him leave for 14 years because they knew he was a talent.
So don't run from Chubb or Hunt yet. And if you have them both, start them both and don't feel bad (unless you have a clearly better option like Zeke too...then probably favor starting Kareem Hunt the larger your ppr value, but its a tough call). The Browns are a perfect storm that make both startable: (a) Both Chubb and Hunt have top-5 rb talent and it comes across when you watch them on the field. With good combinations of strength and speed, each one is TD risk on every snap. (b) Sefanski divides snaps very well. Both are getting touches-a-plenty. They just signed they're "back-up" RB to a new contract (I mean, how often does that happen in the modern NFL?). KS also divides snaps by drive, unless a drive gets very long, so even if Chubb is doing well, he's going to give Kareem Hunt a whole drive. (c) starting both is fading Baker which is smart. The Browns are going to increasingly realize that their offense is more effective with Baker doing less. They may even move to Case Keenum (their back-up, legit didn't know that last week) and that's fine for Chubb/Hunt.
I wouldn't run from OBJ or Jarvis Landry yet either, though Baker's ineptitude has got to make you worry. Think about what Minnesota offenses did over the years with Diggs, Theilen, etc. Both OBJ and Landry are going to be solid bets for big-play TD's (like OBJ's last Thursday) here and there but likely not breaking the top-10. Still, the talent ceiling is high with both so a buy-low scenario where you get them in a trade could pay-off if you bet on Stefanski more than Mayfield.
3. Deandre Hopkins is the WR1
Deandre Hopkins will be the #1 fantasy receiver this year... And most importantly, the offensive situation in Arizona is the perfect storm for his fantasy situation. Kyler Murray is good, but he's not working his way through progressions yet.
Hopkins nabbed a TD but only had 9 targets this week. I'll admit that I only watched Kyler Murray's highlights so forgive me if its there and I didn't see it, buuuuut...He's not completing passes to 2nd and 3rd reads. Its one read then run. That's great for Hopkins' stats because the further into the season they get, the MORE Hopkins is going to be involved on plays designed to chuck it to him, no matter what. Hopkins is one of those guys that's always open, and Kyler is a smart player who knows that AND knows he's not good enough yet to start looking for someone else if Hopkins is "covered". That may hurt the Cardinals at some point. But Hopkins is getting fed this season.
And obviously, a rash of injuries at WR has made this look to be a better prediction. Hopkins is already a stud in that offense and he's still learning it. His stock is only going up from here.
Its true the WR's new offenses typically do poorly. A couple of reasons why that's not true of Hopkins: (a) he's physically the most gifted receiver in the league. Randy Moss kicked ass his first year with the Patriots. Some players are talented enough that it doesn't take time, as long as they're smart as hell like Randy Moss or (b) Hopkins is an intelligent dude. He negotiated his own contract and didn't fuck it up. He wants to be G.M. Big brained guy, he'll pick up quickly. You can see that on the field, he's constantly looking back at Kyler to make sure he did the right thing on each play. (c) HOF'er in the WR room: Fitz will get him up to speed fast.
Quick note about Kyler Murray: He's tearing it up. One encouraging thing that you might not see how little he's allowing himself to be tackled. As a fantasy owner, that's encouraging because it suggests he can sustain a high running floor and not get injured. And there's an added assurance that he's putting those slides for zero yards (for example) on tape because the coaches see that too and are more willing to call more of those plays down the stretch. Still, I wouldn't compare him to Lamar Jackson last season yet. Lamar Jackson was throwing TD's to his 4th and 5th read in week 1 against the Dolphins last season. Murray may hit a scheme ceiling where defenses, especially good ones, start to take away his 1 and 2 and contain his run game (though it is strong and he has good vision).

Things I'm not right about yet but pretty soon I will be:

1. Joe Burrow AJ Green is going to be good.
If you watch the game, you see Joe Burrow fitting the ball into tight windows in clutch situations. In fact, he wasn't finding a lot of open receivers, he was throwing the ball well/correctly into great coverage and making lemonade. Also, AJ Green is looking fully healthy and like his old self.
Well, AJ Green was targeted 13 times and caught...3 of those passes for 29 yards. So clearly, the chemistry between them was oversold by me last week. Still, 13 targets is encouraging and so is the Bengals inability to run the ball. No matter how much they try, they're wretched run-blocking always leaves them down late in games and in 3rd-and-forever situations. They just let a rookie throw it 61 times.
Another consideration is that Denzel Ward was covering Green all night:
A.J. Green has had an up-and-down career vs. the Browns. Thursday’s game was on the down side, and it had mostly to do with Denzel Ward.
Green had three catches for 29 yards. Overall, Ward broke up three passes against the Bengals. And according to Next Gen Stats, Ward was making life difficult for Joe Burrow all night, forcing eight tight window passes in 11 targets as the nearest defender.
Green is still pretty low on trade value charts but stands to have a huge upside as Burrow's primary target.
2. Rodgers is back.
...are there really any physical traits that are important to his game that would fade significantly at 36 year's old? I didn't see any missing zip off of his throws. I did see fucking darts getting tossed all over the field into tiny windows.
Aaron Jones is the #1 fantasy RB right now so obviously saying Rodgers is fully back is pre-mature. However, he is impressing with some very, very pretty darts.
Also, the elephant on the field for the Packers is that Aaron Rodgers is a player driven by ego. Not a knock on him, he's just a guy who needs mojo to play at his finest. Maybe it required the stimulation of an insulting draft pick to prod him back into his HOF form. I'm not saying Rodgers can be a top 3 QB this year with Jackson and Murray running so well, but 4 or 5 doesn't seem out of reach.
Rodgers is pff top-graded QB right now btw.

Fresh takes:

1.The Ravens are the best defense in the NFL.
The loss of Earl Thomas is doesn't matter as much as what has been gained with Patrick Queen and L.J. Fort. Queen is incredibly fast and explosive underneath, getting into the backfield and making big plays. And L.J. Fort (top rated pff lb right now) combine to give them rangey-coverage, tackling, and pass break-up ability over the middle they didn't have before which has further weaponized they're depth at CB (Humphrey, Peters, Smith). Peters specifically is a ball hawk that's found a great home in Baltimore; he couldn't scheme well anywhere else but Harbaugh has found a way to give him the freedom to ball hawk. Over the long haul, Harbaugh has maintained a great defense, regardless of departures/changes, for years and years. When he has this much talent, his defenses are typically dominant.
Be warry of starting iffy players against them at any position.
They're worth trading for, I think the turnovedef TD potential makes them worth it.
2. J.K. Dobbins will break-out out as the preferred option in the Ravens backfield.
Mark Ingram and Gus Edwards have both proven to be reliable RB's for the Raven offense. But Ingram is 30 with over 200 carries in 3 of the last 4 seasons. Edwards has been reliable, a home-grown UDFA. But at 238lbs and without elite speed, he's leaving many big runs on the table.
Dobbins didn't attend the combine. But ran a 4.44 40...in high school:
Dobbins posted a 4.44s 40-yard dash, 4.09s short shuttle and a 43.1-inch vertical jump as a high school senior at the event. There are also many reports that Dobbins squatted over 700 pounds.
He has power running balance and break-out speed that NONE of the other backs in Baltimore have. 4th rounder Justice Hill was their attempt of to develop that speed last year but didn't break out.
A couple of elephants make this one a good bet:
(a) Lamar's durability -- right now, he's taking a bunch of carries because he's the only one in their backfield that has the speed to break huge runs. If Dobbins can fill that role, Lamar Jackson can afford to take fewer chances and John Harbaugh can opt to only drop him back to pass 7 times in the second half when they're winning, like what happened in week 2.
(b) that defense -- Baltimore's defense is going to be great enough this year to take over games, making steady doses of run plays inevitable as they'll spend a lot of games up by 2 scores. Yes, they were up like that a lot last year but their only homerun hitter in the backfield was Lamar (see above, Justice Hill wasn't getting it done).
Here's an example: this is a shot from Gus Edwards' 22 yard scamper last week:

The Ravens offensive line is good at opening holes like this. While it didn't prove important in this game (BAL was up 30-16 at the time), each run like this where a more explosive player could scored is an opportunity cost for the people calling plays. And its not just points left behind, its points scored while Lamar is watching like a fan. Its points that could allow more aggressive defensive play calling. If you're a coach for Baltimore, you don't necessarily want Lamar to have a gaudy stat-line every week if you're winning. If he can throw 16 passes in a game and then sit-out the 4th quarter, that's ideal from the franchise's perspective (though not so much for Fantasy managers). Each Ingram/Edwards run that coulda been a touchdown means there's more time on the field for Lamar, larger portion of the game where they're not playing a dominant lead, and higher chance that they'll lose because points were left on the field. They need someone else hitting home runs in the running game.
Am I fading Lamar because of all of this? Not yet. Eye test = that guy is a singular talent. His throwing motion is smooth like Vick's, just a gifted, effortless release. He's also great at mostly avoiding contact (though all contact is bad contact if you're his coaches). Great decision maker too. Makes multiple reads on plays. Can't say enough about how great of player he is. Still, Baltimore is well put-together enough that they may be able to functionally win without him. So don't be surprised if, especially approaching the playoffs, Baltimore starts calling plays that don't involve as much Lamar. What's scary is that they may be a complete football team without him and he's the reigning MVP.
Finally, Dobbins had two carries last week. One was for a 44 yard gain where the blocking was good but not nearly as good as the image above. Even if the transition to him isn't fast, he could force the issue like Chubb did his rookie year, gaining 100 yards on 3 carries in a game.
No matter what, the Ravens will run by committee but there will come a point where the player to start out of the trio is Dobbins without a doubt.
3. Minshew is the truth and his team situation makes him a great fantasy player.
Minshew isn't the most talented QB in the league. But above all things, he is competitive and scrappy. The Jags are good but not great so he's going need a lot of that scrappy-iness (lol, just say that sentence out loud, you'll hear it). James Robinson is very good and they're going to lean on him a lot. But when the time for much needed yards and points, it seems like the Jags tag Gardner Minshew II's Id in at offensive coordinator. Minshew isn't likely going to be top-5 qb but he might make the top 10 and is likely easier to get than other top targets.
Part of the reason DJ Chark isn't getting the production folks hoped is because Minshew is effectively spreading the ball around. Good for the jags, bad for fantasy owners. I wouldn't panic.
One of his targets I picked-up to stash is Laviska Shenault Jr. He's getting a legit number of carries each week and averaging over 10 yards per reception. He's an interesting pick-up because he doubles as handcuffs for Robinson. Seems like his carry count could go up to 10ish no problem if the Jags lost Robinson. So pay attention to what position he's listed in your league, scoring rules about how carries count in ppr, etc. But he passes the eye test, very shifty and fast on the field.
4. Teams that are quickly turning into dumpster fires that you should across-the-board fade:
Jets
Gase is the worst. Never underestimate the ability of a shitty boss to ruin a workspace and make everyone fucking hate themselves, even though they're well compensated to play a game for a living. Listen, I know there's always gems on bad teams. But I have high blood pressure. So tuning into games with players I need to play well and watching the offense go 3-and-out 5 times in a row...I'm literally too old for that shit now so I try to stray-away from dumpster fire teams.
Vikings
Kubiak has got some big Stefanski shoes to fill and he's doing a bad job so far. I wouldn't panic about Dalvin Cook yet but another bad couple of weeks and I'd start shopping him. See the Browns thing above: Stefanski may have made the Vikings offense look better than it actually was for a decade. Combine that with the defense whose secondary would be better if they were scare crows and you're looking at a team that can't plan to run the ball for more than a quarter or 2.
Teams to be worried about:
Broncos
Whew, the injuries. They're basically just starting with new team. We'll see how things go.
Detroit
Matt Patricia may have lost this team. And coaches like him don't recover team faith/confidence well in a loss-spiral.
Texans
BoB is going to crash that plane into a mountain while we all watch. Poor Watson, just watching Deandre Hopkins ball-out. One thing you can still bet on for awhile out of the Texans offense; Bill O'Brien is ego- and career-invested in David Johnson doing great things. He'll role with him when he shouldn't to prove to everyone that he was right to trade Nuk. Its dumb. But he's dumb.

  1. JK Dobbins scores more fantasy points than CEH this week. (This prediction is backed-up by the time-honored tradition of spitting in one's hand and shaking on it so this shit is serious. Its also painful because I'm a Chiefs fan.)
  2. Laviska Shenault scores a running and a receiving touchdown tonight.
  3. Jonathon Taylor is the RB1 this week and its not close.
  4. Danny Dimes throws 3 TD's this week against the 49ers.
I'm probably wrong about most of this shit but FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD!

Which Primarch could theoretically beat which Primarch?

This is something I find myself thinking about a lot, especially when I'm looking at the Primarchs' tabletop duel stats etc. It's not discussed enough in my opinion and most posts tend to go way of topic.
But, taking both headcannon and lore information into account, I would like to list my own list of which Primarch I think could beat which Primarch (and the reverse).
I would also like to hear everyone else's opinion and reasoning, especially seeing as I haven't read exactly every HH novel etc.
OBS! I don't want any of that "Anyone can beat anyone in the right situations" etc. These fights are strictly 1vs1 with no outside interference but locations may vary to explain why, for example, Sanguinius would be at disadvantage against Mortarion in a tight ship hallway. Also, all Primarchs will be armed with their favored weapons, with discussions on how the fights would go otherwise when applicable, as for example, The Blade of Laer do indeed boost Fulgrim's fighting capability.
PS. You don't need to read it all, sorry for the length. Also, I'm more interested in you guys' opinions about the subject.
My List:
______________' Lion El'Jonson:
The Lion is arguably amongst the greatest duelists amongst the Primarchs alongside Fulgrim, while not the one with the most feats, those shown are remarkable and most others in universe sees him as amongst the best fighters.
Known Facts: "Bested" Russ in a brawl, but it must be clarified that Russ did not take the fight nearly as seriously as Lion. Beat Curze 1vs1 at least twice. Has reflexes that are far greater than Guilliman's (Arguably the best pure reflexes of any Primarch)
Wins against:
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). This is quite easy, as though some texts say otherwise, IMO Horus before his fall was only in the high mid-tier range in 1vs1 fights.
Konrad Curze. Just as shown in cannon.
Corvus Corax. This is due to much the same reasons why he beat Konrad when their strengths are almost the same while their technique may differ, it's not a stretch to say that Lion would beat him quite profoundly.
Roboute Guilliman. Lion reacted faster than Guilliman could see and honestly, Guilliman in lore has been shown to be somewhat lackluster, as he has never won a fight against another Primarch (as the "Alpharius" (which at this time would actually be Omegon) he supposedly killed was confirmed to only be an Alpha Legionnaire.) and was barely able to best Lorgar during the Shadow Crusade due to to him being absolutely focused on the warp sorcery going on. To be frank, Guilliman would be absolutely stomped by Lion.
Lorgar Aurelian. I would like to believe this one needs no explanation, and even with his stronger psychic abilities later on would only make the fight harder but I have no doubt Lion would eventually kill his brother.
Rogal Dorn. Rogal would only slightly do better against Lion than Guilliman, and is more of a general than a warrior and even with his better track record, he would stand no chance against Lion.
Ferrus Manus. Ferrus is tough, strong, skilled and versatile. But this would not stop The Lion from besting him in a duel no matter the location, and while this fight would be hard fought, Ferrus is no duelist.
Alpharius/Omegon. As with Lorgar, this should hopefully not require any explanation, but I will say this: Rogal could best Alpharius (Don't care if he had "help".) The Lion should be able to fillet the youngest ones without issue.
Vulkan. Now this one is certainly going to be controversial, but I say Vulcan is just too slow and not skilled enough in 1vs1 combat to be able to Lion. But if the Lion would be careless or even hesitate once, that hammer would knock him out in one swing.
Perturabo. Perturabo is not a warrior, he is not a duelist, his strengths does not favor 1vs1 combat and even with Forgebreaker he would stand no chance really.
Mortarion. Yes, Mortarion is one tanky bugger ain't he? But he is slow, not extremely skilled and would not be able to survive when The Lion bisects him, which he eventually will. The Lion is not one for pleasantries, gauging his opponents, toying with them or anything else. He is a knight, soldier, duelist, he will go for it and he will not hold back. While you might argue that Mortarion would just tank everything and wait for the Lion to tire, I believe The Lion will win before he can tire.
Loses Against:
Sanguinius Angron Leman Russ Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos) Magnus the Red
Uncertain Ones:
Fulgrim. Fulgrim is about just as skilled a duelist as the Lion, with more focus on elegance and precision, this fight could probably go either way as they are quite similar, I can not with any conviction say either would win decisively.
Jaghatai Khan. The Khan may not be exactly as skilled in pure 1vs1 dueling/swordsmanship as The Lion, but he is just as quick (arguably faster except for reflexes) and has a more defined way of fighting. Lion would probably win but if Jaghatai has his jetbike, The Lion would be in for a fight he really can't win.
Fulgrim:
Ah Fulgrim, you absolut bastard, least compelling traitor and complete lunatic. Fulgrim is a duelist much like The Lion, dancing around his foe with grace and showmanship, it could be argued that he is the fastest with his blade amongst any Primarch.
Known Facts: Won Against Ferrus Manus in their first battle. Lost to Ferrus Manus in their second battle (With The Laer Blade powering him through to the win, this can not be seen as anything but a win for Ferrus Manus.)
Wins Against:
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). Horus himself stated he would not be able to win against Fulgrim in a duel and it is easy to see why. Just like before, Horus simply can't defeat a Primarch like Fulgrim who specializes in duels.
Roboute Guilliman. Similar as the above battle with The Lion, Guilliman just doesn't stand a chance against Fulgrim no matter the location, in a 1vs1 fight, Fulgrim will beat Guilliman Everytime and there is nothing that can change my mind. (Sorry)
Alpharius/Omegon. Don't have anything new to add here, this will be a trend with the coming fights against The Hydra/s. Alpharius would be skewered by Fulgrim superior skill.
Rogal Dorn. Dorn would not be able to land a solid blow on Fulgrim while being to slow to evade his brother's attacks. Rogal would lose this duel very badly, standing no real chance.
Corvus Corax. Corax is fast, mobile and very deadly but lacks the refined skill to be able to win against Fulgrim if the two were to face off. He would not be able to hit him with his whip, and Fulgrim would not allow him close enough to slice him with his claws, dancing and dodging the slashes while his blade parried or just strikes faster than Corax can react. It should be stated that if the battle would be set on a location such as a large location with open ground and high places to flee too, Corax would stand a much greater chance. This fight does not take The Raven's bullshit ability to make himself invisible on command.
Vulkan. Vulkan is too slow and lacks the skill in duels to actually be able to best Fulgrim. Can't really say more than that. Sure Fulgrim would find it hard to do fatal damage to the mountain that is Fulgrim, but it's no matter.
Perturabo. Same reasons as with Pert's duel with the Lion, can't say more.
Lorgar Aurelian. Same as Lorgar's battle with The Lion, but this may differ in that Fulgrim lacks the psychic potential that The Lion has subconsciously and can not be considered as experienced at fighting those powered by the Warp.
Loses Against:
Sanguinius Angron Leman Russ Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos) Magnus the Red
Uncertain Ones:
Jaghatai Khan. Their fighting style's (at least on foot for Khan) are quite similar, with Khan being almost the in between mix of The Lion and Fulgrim, this fight can really go either way. While The Khan has stated that he would be able to beat Fulgrim, statements cannot be taken as facts (since then Lucius would be the best swordsman even when he has lost more duels than anyone ever, even before his fall.)
Ferrus Manus. While is would state that Fulgrim most likely would be able to win at least 7/10 times, Ferrus bested his brother while using Firebrand (a weapon that he does NOT favor in anyway, he is not a swordboy) and can be argued to be amongst the best fighters, there is too much saying that Fulgrim would have won if not for chaos influence and hesitation.
Konrad Curze. Konrad is as furious in combat as Angron with a completely different fighting style and strengths. He is fast, very fast, has battle precognition and is arguably one of the deadliest Primarchs. This fight truly depends on the location, open ground? Konrad, more confined space? Fulgrim.
Mortarion. I can see this fight go much like Mortarions in universe duel against The Khan, neither getting the upper hand while Mortarion let's Fulgrim exhaust himself. Hard to say if Fulgrim is skilled enough to actually kill Mortarion before that.
Perturabo:
Ah mister voe is me. This perpetual manchild is not going to like what I have to say about his duels with his brothers. He is strong and durable, very crafty and smart but no duelist.
Known Facts: ... He killed his sister
Wins Against:
Alpharius/Omegon. It could be stated that this would be a close fight much like Alpharius' battle against Rogal, but I would like to believe that Perturabo would stand a much greater chance, seeing as he is more tanky and would probably just pummel his little brother to death with his hands (or hammer) while shooting at him with his wrist mounted guns.
Lorgar Aurelian. Much like before, Lorgar would not stand a chance since he isn't a fighter. I would say that he would lose against a Lorgar that uses strictly psychic powers as Perturabo isn't familiar with it nor has any real protection against it.
Rogal Dorn. As much as it pains me to admit it (Rogal being one of my favorite characters in universe and I am sick of him being shit upon by everyone and his terrible standing in 30k battles against his brothers.) Rogal probably would stand little chance of winning against Perturabo. This is due to while being arguably a more skilled fighter, his weapon is somewhat clumsy, he is sort of slow for a Primarch that is not in Terminator Armor or simply being a slow bastard (Vulkan, Mortarion, looking at you) and lacks the punch that is needed to take on someone like Perturabo.
Roboute Guilliman. Guilliman stands a greater chance than Rogal does against Perturabo, as he is somewhat faster and has weapons more capable but can be viewed as less skilled in duels and with his weapons overall. He was beaten by Angron while my poor boy had almost no armour, having only chainswords and on the verge of death, would have been killed if not for Angron becoming a Daemon Prince then and there. Probably could go either way but a Perturabo with Forgebreaker would probably win.

Jaghatai Khan:
The second most mysterious Primarch. There is so little on him and that is sad, since his legion/chapter is probably the least favorite one for both Games Workshop and fans. He is the only Primarch with a personal vehicle that is not a transport vehicle and is really a jack of all trades somewhat. (That his Weapon Skill is 7 in 30k makes me mad and confused, you cannot tell me is less skilled with his weapon than Perturabo and Dorn, no way.)
Known Facts:
Fought to a draw against Mortarion. Is the fastest Pirmarch while on his bike. Is knowledgeable about the Warp Is a complete low-key badass
Wins Against:
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). This fight will be hard, his bike would let him kind of steamroll Horus, but even without his bike he is probably much more skilled in not only duels but with his weapon overall. He is faster, more precise and is hard to read. Horus probably would not be able to keep up nor actually land a killing blow.
Alpharius/Omegon. Same as ever.
Lorgar Aurelian. Same as ever, but stands a good chance even against psychic powers not only because of his untapped potential but also because his knowledge around the subject.
Perturabo. Perturabo can't even catch him, he is too slow, not skilled enough and there is nothing he can really do. While tanky, he is not on the same level as Mortarion and Jaghatai's blade would soon cut him apart.
Rogal Dorn. I'm sorry Rogal, you are a great general but not the best duelist. The Khan is just too fast and skilled while also having a better weapon.
Roboute Guilliman. Much like Guilliman's above fight against Fulgrim, he kind of stands no chance against these duelist Primarchs and while he is marginally quicker than Rogal, The Khan is too much.
Ferrus Manus. Ferrus doesn't really know how to fight against The Khan, he is faster, more skilled, wild and unpredictable. Khan wins this fight through sheer prowess.
Loses Against: Sanguinius Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos) Leman Russ Konrad Curze Angron Magnus the Red
Uncertain Ones: Fulgrim. For reasons stated above.
Lion El'Jonson. For reasons stated above.
Vulkan. Much the same reasons as Mortarion below, but with more like "One hit and you're dead" as I don't see any way The Khan is coming back up after one blow from Vulkan's hammer. But if he keeps evading and get his quick attacks in, he may be able to fell his brother. One final blow may be it.
Mortarion. Only because of cannon, it was a draw. Jaghatai's final attack would have ended the battle one way or the other, as it would either kill Mortarion or it would leave him far too open and in turn be killed by Mortarion's Counter Attack.
Leman Russ:
Fuck this guy, really. I am an openly member of Fuck Leman Russ club and I am not apologizing. But... He is amongst the strongest Primarchs in battle, probably top 4, and much like the other 3 in that list, he is comfortable in both 1vs1 duels and battles against hordes. He is furious with a controlled savageness that allows him to be almost as much of a steamroller as Angron while being a tactically able fighter.
Known Facts:
Lost to Angron (Don't give me that shit about wanting to teach his brother a lesson, he would not allow his legion, his sons, to die by the hundreds only to show Angron the error of his ways. He would have wanted to beat Angron to the ground. He is far too proud for anything like that and Angron was not too far lost as he was actually able to be talked to.). Won Against Magnus (With the help of the sisters of silence and his own built in anti psyker powers). Has Anti Psyker Powers. Beat Horus before he hesitated at the last second. Admits he would lose to Sanguinius (and Curze but wtf?) Biggest Hypocrite. Hater. Furry. Has a weird obsession with Wolves. Has Wolf DNA in him.
Wins Against:
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). Even if Russ says he could potentially lose against Horus, it is shown that a buffed Horus still lost to Leman (sure he had the Emperor's Spear but still) and I can say that IMO Leman pretty much dances around each of Horus' attacks while tearing him apart.
Lorgar Aurelian. Bye psychic powers, hello weakest fighter amongst the Primarchs. Leman would kill Lorgar before Lorgar even gets to swing his pretty little mic.
Alpharius/Omegon. Steamrolled. Next.
Rogal Dorn. Steamrolled. Next.
Roboute Guilliman. Steamrolled. Next.
Corvus Corax. Steamrolled. Next.
Perturabo. Steamrolled. Next.
Fulgrim. Steamrolled. Next.
Lion El'Jonson. A fair fight but I Russ would take the fight deadly serious, he would pretty much steamroll The Lion with pure overwhelming force.
Vulkan. Is one of the few ones to both be fast enough and powerful enough to decisively take out Vulkan quickly.
Ferrus Manus. Steamrolled. Just watch the hammer. Next.
Jaghatai Khan. Much like The Lion but worse off. Steamrolled. Next.
Loses Against: Angron. Sanguinius. Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos). Magnus the Red (Wait for it).
Uncertain Ones: Konrad Curze. I mean... Sure he is Crazy and one of my top 3 favorite Primarchs, but really Leman? You think you would lose to Konrad? I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say yeah I will take your word for it but I will also say that if Konrad takes so much as one solid hit from Russ, it's over.
Rogal Dorn:
The Strongest Primarch, he found his dear brother murdered, his father dying, carried his Father's body to the Golden Throne and oversaw what transpired. That takes a strength I would say most other Primarchs does not possess (Maybe those like Perturabo, Mortarion and Ferrus but they were somewhat stone cold). He is amongst the best generals and pretty much the warmaster for the Loyalists. He is not the best fighter and his weapons aren't really as good as a Primarch deserves, but he makes do. He fights like a soldier, like a Space Marine.
Known Facts: Cannot/Will not tell a lie. Has one of the coolest weapons in the universe (Storm's Teeth is the shit, too bad it has shit rules). Killed Alpharius. Had a natural sense of which one was Alpharius. Was scared of Konrad after almost being murdered. The most loyal of sons. The most loyal of Fathers. Banished Daemon Prince Fulgrim. Longest Living/Active Loyal Primarch. Best Treehouse Builder in the Galaxy. Adorable. You can suck him off while standing.
Wins Against: Alpharius/Omegon. Just as cannon.
Lorgar Aurelian. Lorgar is not strong enough and about as fast, but not skilled enough. His psychic powers may even it out but I'm going with a win for Rogal.
Loses Against: Angron. Sanguinius. Horus Lupercal (Both Versions) Leman Russ. Konrad Curze. Perturabo. Mortarion. Vulkan. Ferrus Manus. Fulgrim. Magnus the Red. Jaghatai Khan. Lion El'Jonson.
Uncertain Ones: Roboute Guilliman. I want to say Rogal but I can't really say why. Both have pretty much the same track record, I want to say Rogal is more skilled in combat and stronger but a bit slower. Storm's Teeth could possibly match Guilliman's Fists but that is up for debate.
Corvus Corax. I believe Dorn to be one of the tank Pirmarchs alongside Perturabo, Vulkan, Ferrus Manus and Mortarion, but the least tanky of them. I can see this going either way depending on how Corax goes about it. If he goes in with his claws, especially if Dorn even as much as gets one hand around one of his arms, it's over for The Raven. But if he just keeps dancing around him with hit and runs, he will win.
Konrad Curze:
My poor baby boy, how fate was cruel to you. I love Konrad, but he is truly insane, even if he did not have his split personality he would still be driven mad due to his constant visions, he deserves so much more. He fights like serial killer Batman mixed with Dracula. When he strikes, it's precise, brutal & as horrible as possible. He often toys with his prey and I feel quite comfortable in saying that he is the most stealthy amongst his brothers (No Alpharius/Omegon, you are not as stealthy, but you are better at misdirection and subterfuge). Even if he is specialized in dueling, he is, alongside Angron, the deadliest of Primarchs.
Known Facts:
Lost to Lion El'Jonson twice. Was able to hold his grounds against both Guilliman and Lion at the same time. Is the Night Haunter. Is Clinically Insane. Possible multiple personality disorder. Was capable of hiding from three legions on a planet for quite some time. Was capable of hiding from The Lion and his legion in their own ship for months! Brutalized Rogal (Not a victory perse but notable). Went rouge before the Heresy. Hates his legion. Only ever trusted Fulgrim (Why!?) And was betrayed. Has the greatest precognition out of anyone in universe. Latent Psyker. Saved Lorgar's life and made Corvus Corax flee. Deserves better. Death is nothing compared to vindication.
Wins against:
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). While Horus is strong and beefy, I believe Konrad would be able to outright outmanoeuvre Horus and dissect him little by little. Horus would not be able to keep up with his speed and Shadow play.
Rogal Dorn. Rogal is far too slow to keep up and lacks the ability to defend against such an onslaught of attacks that Konrad is capable of.
Roboute Guilliman. I'm calling it out as I read it, if The Lion was not fighting alongside Guilliman against Konrad, Curze would have slaughtered Roboute. He is too slow to react to Curze, lacks the fighting ability to keep up with his style of fighting and would probably be blitzed much like Dorn.
Alpharius/Omegon. Blitzed by Konrad, doesn't stand a chance, enough said.
Lorgar Aurelian. Blitzed by Konrad, his precognition helps him against Lorgar's warp foolery and Lorgar is far too slow and incapable of handling The Night Haunter.
Perturabo. Ol' Pert is too slow. While tanky, this is nothing new to Konrad and he would just hit and run him until Perturabo falls over.
Vulkan. Putting "It's also a Hammer" aside, Vulkan, like many of the Primarchs, is just too slow to handle Konrad, and while strong as heck and tanky, this doesn't meant anything if he is incapable of actually hitting him. But if Konrad takes one hit, he probably wouldn't recover fast enough.
Ferrus Manus. This might be the hardest battle against one of the Tanky ones for Konrad, as Ferrus is also very skilled in combat and not nearly as slow as the others. But is still too slow and incapable of reacting fast enough to Konrad. It would be a tough battle but Konrad would make it out with a nice pair of Metal (Iron) Hands as new trophies.
Jaghatai Khan. While almost as fast as Konrad, the only way I'm seeing Khan having a chance in this fight is with his jetbike, but then again, Konrad has a jump pack (why isn't it shown on his model? Can anyone actually explain that?) And also some power over shadows. Konrad is just as savage as The Khan, even less predictable and much more dedicated to the hunt (he has patience unlike any other Primarch). The Khan cannot try to outlast The Night Haunter and needs to try and catch him as fast as possible, but will most likely fail.
Corvus Corax. Okay, Corax may have later said that he could have beaten both Lorgar and Curze at the same time (I'm calling bullshit on that, Corax is nowhere near the level to take on two Primarchs, even if one was injured). Corax is basically diet Konrad, being less skilled, less sneaky, having no real psychic powers outside of his bullshit "invisible" powers that doesn't seem to work half the time. Konrad is more dangerous, deadlier, more skilled, faster and less predictable. This is really the definition of the meme "I'm you but better".
Loses Against:
Angron. Sanguinius. Lion El'Jonson. Magnus the Red. Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos).
Uncertain Ones:
Fulgrim. For the same reasons stated above.
Leman Russ. For the same reasons stated above. (But really, Leman would probably win).
Mortarion. I can hear you already "Mortarion would just tank anything thrown at him and wait for Konrad to tire!", But Konrad doesn't tire easily, even by Primarch standards, he has never showed any slowing down and The Lion is only capable of handling him due to being remarkably skilled in 1vs1 and having his (potentially) psychic enhanced reflexes, which nullifies most of Konrad's Precognition. Konrad could potentially cut Mortarion appart, not with small cuts like The Khan, but with deep, tearing slashes. Though Mortarion's natural ability to tire those in combat with him (potentially psyker ability since he was a Latent one) could prove more effective than anticipated if Curze doesn't finish the fight fast enough, he would fall to the reaping blows of Silence.
Sanguinius:
The Fabolous Fucking Hawkboy himself, best fighter amongst his brothers and amongst the most beloved. The Angel is widely considered, by most in universe and outside, to be the strongest fighter amongst the Primarchs (Too bad his tabletop rules doesn't reflect that, no I'm not bitter, shut up.). He is a beast, with skill comparable to Angron and Leman, but more controll, more fury than rage or savagery. As mobile as Konrad, Khan and Corax, but no negative drawbacks and more controll over it. He is the perfect mix, being able to best almost anyone in 1vs1 while also being able to fight hordes.
Known Facts:
Won against Daemon Prince Angron. Held Eternity Gate for a whole day alone (Against Hundreds/Thousands of Traitor Marines, titans, knights, Mechanicum, cultists etc. Literal armies. Therefore he is an army killer.). Has Precognition. Broke a Bloodthirster's back. Fought for days without rest. Has Giant Fucking Wings. He loves you. Has somewhat lackluster rules on the Tabletop. The Black Rage is the psychic/genetic scream/shockwave from his hatred and rage towards Horus. Went into battle knowing he would die. Deserves Better. It should have been him. Pure As They Come. Died for your sins.
Wins Against:
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). Totally outmatched, too slow, lacks the skills, cannot keep up. Sanguinius probably blitzes him and totally destroys him.
Fulgrim. Fulgrims battle speed is the only thing that gives him a slight chance, but can only carry him so far. Sanguinius is more mobile, more skilled, better armed and more fabolous.
Perturabo. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Next.
Jaghatai Khan. Khan's speed is nothing compared to the skill gap between the two, their speeds are most likely equal and mobility is arguable, but in a duel, The Khan is doomed.
Leman Russ. Pretty much one of four Primarchs than can beat Leman, not only because of Russ' statement (one of the few statements that has any actual weight to them since it's Leman, and him admitting that he can't beat someone is like Trump admitting to Obama being a better President than himself.) but also due to actual feats. The only fest Leman has over Sanguinius is almost killing Horus, but then again that Horus wasn't as powerful as the one at the end and The Spear of the Emperor really made the difference (it was also an ambush). Sanguinius would emerge the victor after a vicious battle but victor nonetheless.
Rogal Dorn. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Next.
Konrad Curze. A drawn out fight due to both of them having precognition and it seems, to me, that Sanguinius precog was going overdrive when fighting Curze, but Curze is neither as skilled as Sanguinius nor as strong physically. They are about equal in speed but Konrad doesn't really have anything substantial over Sanguinius.
Alpharius/Omegon. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Next.
Lorgar Aurelian. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Psychic powers does not even out the gap. Next.
Ferrus Manus. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Not as badly as most but not good enough. Next.
Mortarion. Blitzed. Steamrolled. He cannot endure The Angel and Sanguinius will not tire (fought for days! Days!) And he cannot match him at anything.
Roboute Guilliman. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Won't even be able to either hit Sanguinius nor truly react.
Angron. It is true that Angron was more or less Horus "secret" weapon against Sanguinius, but even as a Daemon Prince he was defeated. It could be possible that Non-Daemon Angron would fear better but I would like to say not good enough. Sanguinius has mobility and control, while Angron only really has ferocity and unpredictability to help him. Sanguinius would probably be able to either evade or tire Angron out enough for an opening and that would end it.
Corvus Corax. Steamrolled. Next.
Vulkan. Cannot even react to Sanguinius, nor can he hit him. He won't be able to endure Sanguinius and will fall like all those before him.
Lion El'Jonson. Would be a more fair fight than most, with Lion's dueling ability and reflexes helping a fair bit, but he lacks mobility and would probably not be able to stand up to Sanguinius onslaught for long. He would probably be able to land a few solid strikes, dodge some and even counter, but in the end he won't last.
Loses Against:
Horus (Post-Chaos). Just like cannon, even if he wasn't exhausted, Chaos Horus is basically Emperor Level (Psychic Might none withstanding.). Magnus the Red.
Ferrus Manus:
Ah, poor Gorgon, if only your son's actually listened to you. The least developed and most often forgotten, Ferrus is a unit. Loyal. Steadfast. Honest. Logical. Tanky. Strong. Intelligent. Ferrus is low-key one of the powerhouse Primarchs that could probably solo titans if he committed. He was, along with Perturabo, the most mechanically inclined, but more focused on wargear and equipment and not machines. But unlike Perturabo, Manus is quite comfortable on the frontline with his hammer being more or less the second most powerful main weapon for a Primarch (After Dawnbringer).
Known Facts:
Lost first fight against Fulgrim. Won second fight agais Fulgrim. Died as a result of Daemon Weapon bullshit. Probably Second Strongest Primarch Physically, thanks to his metal arms. Has Metal Arms. Almost perfected Terminator Armor. The Flesh Is Weak (But still better than metal). Low-key badass. Underrated. Loves the Mechanicum. Doesn't have armour on arms (not even the parts that are flesh), still 3++ invulnerable save.
Wins Against:
Perturabo. Better Weapon, more experienced in duels, faster, has better equipment for battles. Perturabo is perhaps more tanky but he is far too slow to make up for it, and without Forgebreaker, he will lose, badly.
Mortarion. "Mortarion will endure", not against Forgebreaker he won't, that thing is an absolute beast and would demolish Mortarion quite easily. Ferrus is also faster, seeing as Mortarion is more or less the second or third slowest Primarch, while better armed and armoured.
Alpharius/Omegon. He/They may be faster and all, but they will.probably cave after a single solid hit and they are not armored or armed as well as Ferrus, nor are they as skilled in combat, they would be crushed under the might of the Gorgon! Ferrus Smash!
Lorgar Aurelian. The only chance Lorgar has is with his psychic powers, otherwise he is outmatched in every area outside of speed. Ferrus Smash!
Rogal Dorn. Around equal speed, but the wargear for the two makes the difference. The Gorgon pretty much just crushes Rogal before Rogal can finish his swing with Storm's Teeth and even if the chainsword were to hit, Ferrus would probably just tank any hit. Ferrus Smash!
Roboute Guilliman. Much like Rogal, but fairing a bit better since his weapons would be more capable of dealing damage, but still not skilled enough, being a statesman does that to you. Ferrus Smash!
Loses Against:
Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos). Leman Russ. Sanguinius. Angron. Konrad Curze. Lion El'Jonson. Jaghatai Khan. Magnus The Red.
Uncertain Ones:
Vulkan. I don't even have anything to say about this one, their weapons both smash! Both are tanky as hell, both are extremely strong, Ferrus is quicker but is it enough? I don't know. Your thoughts?
Corvus Corax. One hit is all it take for The Raven to go down, but will he be able to hit him? Depends on location and how Corax chooses to handle the situation, a straight forward Assault will lead to his death.
Fulgrim. Same reasons as above.
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). Probably one of the closest fights. Armoured tanks and similar in skill level, Horus is slightly more skilled in 1vs1 but Worldbreaker is not on the same level as as Forgebreaker nor is he as fast.
Angron: The son who was never given a fair chance, the one that deserved better than anything given to him, the one who could probably have been the greatest of them all. But alas, he became what he became. He is by far the most dangerous of all Primarchs, is amongst the strongest, m Top fighter, most savage and brutal, deadliest and overall a fucking beast.
Known Facts:
Killed an Aeldari Assassin Squad as a newborn with nothing but his hands and stones. Beat Leman Russ. Beat Guilliman. Held up a Titan's Foot. Is the Angriest of them all (Rightly so). Hates The Emperor. Wants To Die. Has needles in his brain that is slowly killing him and makes him unreasonable, unable to process emotions nor think clearly, also causing immense pain. Basically Betrayed by the Emperor. Cried only twice in his life. He pisses on Terra! Honorable. Deserved Better. Really Fucking Mad. Had a strange empathic channeling power before the Butcher's Nails that made people feel calm and comfortable around him.
Wins Against:
Every. Single One. (Except Sanguinius and Magnus.)
Lion El'Jonson. Steamrolled. Cannot handle the ferocity. Next.
Fulgrim. Steamrolled. Cannot handle the ferocity. Next.

Lorgar Aurelian. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Next.
Ferrus Manus. Blitzed. Steamrolled. His weapon and armor makes him more capable but he won't be able to keep up. Next.

Roboute Guilliman. Just like Cannon, completely outmatched and with either Widowmaker or the Gore Duo, it's even worse. Blitzed. Steamrolled. Next.
Horus Lupercal (Pre-Chaos). Seeing as Horus wanted Angron as he saw him as the only one capable of having a chance at defeating Sanguinius, it's quite easy to say Horus has no real chance against Angron.
Loses Against: Horus Lupercal (Post-Chaos). Sanguinius. Magnus The Red.

Update 09/30:

  • Fixed some issues that caused disconnections(e.g. when players are fighting Beisa in Oryx’s Sanctuary).
  • Fixed issue with decimal points displaying in the Pentaract Tower Boss’ HP Bar.
  • Death in a dungeon will no longer occasionally reduce the Dungeon completed count in the Exaltation panel.
  • Exaltation points on a non-maxed stat will no longer display the stat as maxed when reaching the threshold.
  • The boss’ quest marker in the Cultist Hideout now shows correctly.
  • “Cancel” and “Submit” buttons now appear correctly in the “Change Your Password” menu.

Update 09/25:

  • Fixed issue with accessing the boss room in Undead Lair.

The New Systems

Vital Combat

Vital Combat is a brand new gameplay system that affects Health and Mana regeneration via Pet abilities and the Vitality and Wisdom stats. Vital Combat is meant to address the long-term health of the metagame by looking at just how players are challenged by the content.
  • When you are hit by a certain amount of damage, you will enter the In Combat state. This puts your WIS and VIT regeneration at half speed*, and adds a 2 second delay to your Pet’s abilities. The condition lasts for a base duration of 7 seconds but it is affected by your Vitality. For every 5 VIT the duration is reduced by 0.2 seconds with a minimum duration of 1 second.
  • *The regeneration speed of VIT and WIS has been doubled, which means that while In Combat you will passively regenerate as before, and while Out of Combat you will regenerate much faster!
  • The amount of damage to enter the In Combat state is scaled based on your Defense. You can see this Combat Trigger value by hovering over the new Vital Combat tooltip above your Fame bar.

Exaltations

Exaltation is the new endgame progression system, which will reward you with permanent upgrades for the stats of your Exalted classes. It will revolve around the endgame dungeons:

Whenever your 8/8 character finishes one of these dungeons by killing the boss, the completion is counted in the Exaltation system towards the corresponding stat for the class you are using. If you reach a certain amount of completions in each stat, you get stat bonuses. You can reach up to 5 stat bonuses in each stat. Every stat bonus gives you an increase of +1 to the stat (+5 to HP/MP), and they are permanent for that class. Forever. The Exaltation rewards certainly do not end with stat bonuses!
  • The Fast Learner Exaltations will give you a permanent bonus to XP gain on a certain class every time you achieve a certain amount of any stat bonuses on that class.
  • The Mastery Exaltations will give you a weapon attack damage bonus when you achieve a certain amount of each stat bonus of a class.
  • The Armor Proficiency Exaltations will decrease the time spent In Combat when you achieve bonuses in all stats on classes that wear the same armor type.
  • The Weapon Proficiency Exaltations will reward you with higher drop rates on all items when you achieve bonuses in all stats on classes that use the same weapon type.
Not only will your Exalted classes be powerful, they’ll look it too! If you achieve the impressive feat of maxing out all stats on a class, you will receive the Exalted Skin for that class and decorate your Vault with new Golden Statues.
And while you are busy grinding out stat bonuses for any and all classes, you will be receiving these exclusive Pet Skins... until you max out all of them, and receive a permanent 10% drop rate on all classes!

The Appetizer

This gourmand has a twisted relationship with food, hoarding it for himself yet utilizing it as a humiliating weapon. You will meet this new event boss next week and have the chance to punch him until he turns into little piles of food himself!
The Appetizer will spawn in the Mountains after all Red Demons are defeated. Along with him, three Food Piles spawn across the map. The Appetizer teleports to the food piles one by one and his properties change based on the Food Pile that he is next to.
The Food Piles will have a chance to drop their respective type of Food or a Mystery Stat Pot. They will also drop a guaranteed Food Voucher x1 token which stacks up to 40. You can double click the stack to turn it into a Food item - you can see the possible options in the full changelog document. The Appetizer will also drop a guaranteed Food Voucher x1. He can also drop any of the five Food Pile foods, Mystery Stat Pots, and a hefty Rogue Skin.

The Reconstructed

Realm is a decade old game that is still growing and moving forward, and we do not want older content to be left behind and feel obsolete. There must be a place and purpose for all, and shiny new sprites to boot!
The Pirate Cave, Spider Den, Snake Pit, Undead Lair, and Abyss of Demons have received dramatic overhauls in all aspects, with some much lighter changes to the Forest Maze as well. Even the Keyper has seen improvements and balance tweaks! We’ve got plenty of details in the full changelog linked earlier, so we recommend checking it out!

UT and ST Increased Drop Rates

As we mentioned last Friday, the old Archer and Rogue ST sets are now dropping with an increased drop rate!
The majority of the UTs and STs across the board are now also dropping with an increased drop rate as well! A complete list of individual items with buffed rates has been included in the full changelog document.

Other Fixes and Improvements

  • Randomly offset ground tile sprites now work on Exalt, allowing for more natural looking textures like grass with less obvious tiling.
  • Added Vital Combat and Exaltation pages to the in-game Journal.
  • Fixed “Player on Top“ option to not show other players’ projectiles and status effects on your character.
  • Fixed DC issues:
    • when trading with a player who has special characters in the name.
    • when wearing the following set: Divinity + Seal of the Battle God + Mercy's Bane + Ring of Unbound Attack.
    • when using Cursed Spire Spell and changing the area right before it explodes.

Recap for the Year of Shadowkeep

Quite a bit of stuff has happened since the launch of Shadowkeep exactly one year ago today (October 1st, 2019), so I wanted to take a look back at all of the memories that our Guardians might've had over that period. It was... an interesting year to say the least. Let's get into it:
October 1st: The Moon was closed for 7 to 8 hours after launch due to server mishaps, but we got to see a dormant Pyramid Ship and Nightmares manifest for the first time in-game.
Nightmare Hunts were available upon completing the campaign, and the Nightfall: The Ordeal playlist introducing Champion enemies launched with The Pyramidion strike on Io.
Pinnacle Power cap was 960.
October 5th: The Garden of Salvation raid launched and the World's First team was from the Ascend clan. Jötunn, Sealed Ahamkara Grasps, and Peregrine Greaves were all disabled during Contest mode as they were in a bugged state at the time of release. The Vex Offensive six-player seasonal activity also launched at the same time.
October 6th: The Divinity quest in Garden of Salvation was discovered and completed.
October 19th: Telesto was disabled for the first time as a bug that allowed nearly instant full Super energy was discovered with the Enhanced Ashes to Assets mod. Telesto began accumulating more exploits throughout the year, but none of them warranted Bungie to re-disable it.
October 29th: The Pit of Heresy dungeon was released and Zulmak was conquered by many, as well as a secret boss named Volmâr that finished the quest for Xenophage. It also replaced the old activity fighting Nightmare Ogres in Sorrow's Harbor with a horde mode called Altars of Sorrow. A new Crucible game mode Momentum Control also rolled out for the first time.
November 6th: Bagel4k was the first person to reach 999 Power (and subsequently four digits), and was guided through The Shattered Throne dungeon by Gladd from the Redeem clan to see if the curse on the Dreaming City could be broken.
November 7th: Pinnacle Power rewards were permanently changed to offer +2 bonus instead of +1, which greatly changed the grind of Power leveling.
November 19th: The Vex Portal that had been in construction for weeks behind Ikora in The Tower finished and The Undying Mind was slain in multiple realities.
December 10th: Season of Dawn launched with significant Solar subclass changes (e.g. Weighted Knife and Knock 'Em Down for Hunter and Celestial Fire/Heat Rises/Double Icarus Dash for Warlock), and class ability cooldowns were altered to be governed by a particular stat and Paragon mods were phased out.
The Recluse was finally nerfed on non-precision damage, Xenophage was buffed considerably, and Divinity was nerfed to not stack with other debuffs. Exotic Engrams and Fated Engrams unified and granted only Exotic Armor if all other Exotics were obtained.
Cabal were added as Champions in Nightfall: The Ordeal, The Sundial was launched as another six-player seasonal activity, and the Corridors of Time Part 1 mission began in an effort to save Saint-14.
Pinnacle Power cap increased to 970.
December 17th: The Corridors of Time Part 2 mission released and Saint-14 left the Infinite Forest for good.
December 20th: Saint-14 parked his iconic jumpship in The Hangar and became a new vendor in The Tower. Soccer was retired as an activity in that location.
January 7th: The quest for Devil's Ruin went live and the comedic dialogue between Lord Shaxx, Osiris, and Saint-14 ensued. Wormgod Caress was disabled for the first time as a bug allowed retaining the Burning Fists perk when switching gauntlets.
January 10th: Winter's Guile joined the ranks of Wormgod Caress in being disabled for the first time due to a similar bug allowing for retention of the Warlord's Sigil perk while switching gauntlets. The two Exotics were disabled a few more times afterward, breaking the record of most time disabled.
January 14th: The Corridors of Time was mysteriously opened with no clear mission attached and an infinite amount of time to explore. It was the setup for a new community puzzle akin to Niobe Labs that had to be solved to unlock a new Exotic weapon quest.
January 17th: A hotfix was deployed to correct the damage values of the Exotic Bow Wish-Ender after the major December 10th 2.7.0 Update caused it to do triple the damage. However, this hotfix also unintentionally caused it to do up to 16x the damage if fired behind a non-player penetrable object. Since very few opportunities of the exploit could be executed, the weapon wasn't patched any further.
January 20th: The Corridors of Time puzzle was officially solved after six full days and the quest for the Exotic Fusion Rifle Bastion was released for players to earn.
January 28th: A bugged hotfix launched that accidentally removed some currencies and materials of all players, causing Bungie to extend maintenance time to perform their first ever server rollback.
February 4th: The Empyrean Foundation community event launched which allowed players to donate the Seasonal material (Polarized Fractaline) at The Tower Obelisk, in exchange for quick Seasonal bounty progression and to receive plenty of upgrade materials and weapons. Multiple stages of donations up to Stage 7 were added and shown in the Crucible playlist, and when the final stage was reached, The Lighthouse would be rekindled for future use.
February 25th: Stage 7 was finally met with 9,777,777,000 Polarized Fractaline donated and the cutscene to rekindle The Lighthouse would be unlocked for all players. At the same time, Trials of Osiris was officially revealed to come back in mid-March.
March 10th: Season of the Worthy launched with general subclass/ability tuning. Sword use got a complete overhaul and relied on melee energy (which would drain and recharge on its own) to perform heavy attacks and guard. As a result of one change, you could not use any Warlock Glide off of a ledge with the Worldline Zero's Tesseract perk activated, which shook up the speedrunning community. The Honed Edge perk on Izanagi's Burden no longer was affected by any reload-increasing buffs or mods.
Emblems gained a new system where you could add a stat tracker (legacy to seasonal) of your choosing to any emblem you like, the Quest tab added a new Categories overlay to sort any quests with ease, and head auras from Prestige Leviathan and Nightfall completions were removed from the game.
Fallen were added as Champions in Nightfall: The Ordeal, the Seraph Tower Public Event was added as a seasonal activity, and all of Ana Bray's voice lines in the game were updated from Jamie Chung's to Erika Ishii's, including new dialogue for the season itself.
Bungie switched from direct P2P networking to Steam's datagram relay to prevent DDoS attacks in Trials of Osiris, but it unintentionally caused a major spike of "beaver" and related connection-based errors over the Season's duration.
Pinnacle Power cap increased to 1010.
March 13th: Trials of Osiris was rebranded and launched after player efforts from the Empyrean Foundation of the Season prior. Artifact Power was enabled for the first week, but was disabled from week two onward due to community backlash that players could infinitely inflate their Power level and gain an unfair advantage. Saint-14 also became the vendor and announcer for Trials of Osiris.
March 17th: The Fourth Horseman quest went live and the legendary Shaxxercise mixtape in Commander Zavala's office was revealed.
March 31st: A bug caused the Warden of Nothing strike in the Nightfall: The Ordeal playlist to reward double loot drops. This accident was lauded by the community and soon became an occasional event in the Season afterward.
April 7th: Rasputin's monitors which displayed the Solar System in all Seraph Bunkers updated for the first time to show two red blinking triangles at the far-right edge. Every Tuesday reset onward it would update with more red blinking triangles, which were soon discovered to be active Pyramid Ships invading the Solar System.
April 21st: Grandmaster difficulty of Nightfall: The Ordeal was launched with The Insight Terminus strike on Nessus. The difficulty of the Seraph Tower Public Event increased as two support towers could activate at once and the charge cycles required more effort. Seraph Ordnance Beacons erected all over the backdrops of the EDZ, Io, and the Moon, and a small side activity involving Rasputin's combat frames protecting Sleeper Nodes appeared in all three locations as well.
Guardian Games made its debut as the three-week Spring activity involving Eva Levante offering bounties to earn three different medals: Bronze, Silver, and Gold to bank them in The Tower to represent your Guardian class. A new Exotic Machine Gun Heir Apparent was available if most of the triumphs during the event were completed.
An update was deployed and it fixed the difficulty scaling of The Whisper, Zero Hour, and Zero Hour (Heroic) secret missions that was caused after the major March 10th 2.8.0 Update, as weapons and abilities would do far more damage to enemies than normal.
May 12th: Titans emerged victorious in the Guardian Games by a long mile as they secured a win in 20 of the 21 days that the event was live. A golden statue of a lion representing the Titan class fending off the animals that represent the other two classes was placed right beside Zavala in The Tower as a result.
Another community-driven event akin to Empyrean Foundation started in an effort to arm Rasputin by means of completing nine million Seraph Tower Public Events (three million per location), but individual Guardian completions counted. Due to an influx of concerns over the likelihood of not completing the goal within the Season, progress was updated to have a 5x multiplier on weekdays and 10x on weekends.
May 17th: The Seraph Tower community goal was achieved and all players were able to pick up The Lie quest from Ana Bray. Unfortunately, when players progressed to the final step where you needed to access the Moon Bunker by means of a mission, a bug caused the mission flag to be incorrectly linked to The Sanctuary spawn location, so it was effectively impossible to obtain the weapon.
May 21st: A hotfix was deployed to fix the bug for The Lie quest and people were able to obtain the Legendary Shotgun Felwinter's Lie, which was revamped from Destiny.
May 26th: The Almighty faintly appeared in The Tower skybox and partially eclipsed The Sun, and a new ominous music track would play when transmatting into The Tower.
June 2nd: The Almighty became visibly closer and largely eclipsed The Sun.
June 6th: The very first live event in Destiny's history, called Sister's Vengeance, started at 10 AM PST and ended at 11:30 AM PST in The Tower. Guardians gathered to witness The Almighty slowly get bombarded by Rasputin's ordnance from satellites that were made as a result of the community-wide Seraph Tower event. The core of The Almighty eventually gave way and exploded in a spectacular fashion, which sent a large wing to come crashing down into the mountain range behind The Last City. A sizeable piece of debris permanently ravaged the backside of Eververse Trading Co., and a tall antenna went missing from the ensuing shockwave. For three days, smaller debris was still seen falling from the sky in the distance of The Tower skybox.
June 9th: Season of Arrivals launched...
Okay, I've been writing this all day - I'm sure we remembered pretty clearly what happened this Season thus far (and there's a few more things to come). So, that brings me to my final question: What's your best memory of Year 3? I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Trailblazer League - An extensive overview of every region with content, uniques, quest unlocks and more

Trailblazer is the 2nd league in OSRS, releasing 28 October and lasts for 2 months. The world map is divided into 9 regions, where everyone starts with Misthalin (including Zanaris & Fossil Island), and Karamja as a free unlock. You can then unlock subsequent regions by completing a fixed number of tasks (task difficulty doesn’t matter), however of the 7 remaining regions you may only pick a maximum of 3, rendering about half the map inaccessible for you throughout the league. These areas may be picked freely in any order, meaning strategy and style of play is important factors when choosing regions.

There is a big uncertainty here, and that’s relics. At this point we don’t know what effects tier 2-6 relics will have, and their effects could very well influence your final decision about which regions you pick. Example could be 1 tick faster attack speed which will make blowpipe an absolute monster.

About leagues
Leagues is a seasonal gamemode revolving around completing various tasks on time-limited servers with additional rules such as area restrictions, trade restrictions and boosted xp rates. The goal is to provide a completely fresh and unique gameplay experience which you couldn’t achieve in the main game. Your league progression is entirely separate from the main game, though you can’t play on the same account in both versions at the same time.
Leagues also features tasks, relics and points. Completing tasks is the main objective of leagues, which earns you some league points depending on their difficulty. Task examples are killing a goblin, cook 100 sharks, and obtain an infernal cape. These points can be spent on main game tradeable cosmetic rewards. By completing tasks you’ll eventually earn enough points to unlock relics, which are powerful and permanent buffs to your character while playing leagues. Relic examples are doubled resources from gathering skills, ability to pick your own slayer tasks, and increased attack speed. There are 6 relic tiers, each requiring an increasingly amount of points to unlock, where each tier consists of 3 relics. You can pick one of the three relics, but choose wisely as this is a permanent choice.
